Lebes Gamikos
Red figured three part lebes gamikos.
The vessel has a bulbous body, two opposing handles raised high above the flat shoulder and a base. Handles with knob-like decoration on the top and in front of the handles on front side heads of Amazons with Phrygian caps and on back side large cone-shaped knobs. The lid consists of a smaller Lebes Gamikos with a woman's head on each side and a lid with a knob.
A bridal scene is depicted on the front side of the large vessel. Depicted is a woman seated on a chair, the bride, with an Eros standing on her lap. Behind her stands a woman with a wreath in her left hand, who offers her a Taenia with her right. In front of her stands a young man who has thrown a cloak around his shoulders and is also offering her an object. Three taenias and a wreath above the scene. Above an egg- pattern and below the scenes a surrounding wavy pattern.
The back side depicts a seated woman with a mirror in her right hand, dressed in a himation covering her lower body. Next to her stands a young man with a thyrsos and a wreath.
Palmettes and rosettes below the handles. An Eros with a cista on the front shoulder and a palmette on the back shoulder.
Lebes gamikoi were wedding vessels and were used during the ceremony.
Handle recomposed from fragments with filling and retouching of break lines; small aerea of modern infill. Surface of the small Lebes Gamikos slightly abraded. Lid new.
